Distant migration of silicone gel from ruptured silicone breast prosthesis to forearm

Abstract
|
|
|
After Cronin used silicone prosthesis for augmentation mammoplasty, it is known as a material which cause minimal foreign body reaction. But it could not be a perfect material for augmentation mammoplasty. Among the problems with silicone prosthesis, capsular contractor and prosthesis rupture are reported.
We experienced a case of prosthesis rupture with progressive complication. Without history of trauma, the prosthesis itself was ruptured and expelled silicone gel migrated to ipsilateral upper arm and forearm along the facial plane and form multiple forearm along the facial plane and form multiple foreign body granuloma(siliconoma). And reviewed the other reported cases of prosthesis rupture.
For the treatment of prosthesis rupture, followings should be considered.
1. Silicone prosthesis could be ruptured with closed capsulotomy or without a history of trauma. 2. After rupture of prosthesis, leaked silicone gel can move as far as lower abdomen or forearm.
3. As soon as rupture of prosthesis is noted, ruptured prosthesis and silicone gel must be removed for the prevention of progressive complication.
